Thankfully the 250 kilometre drive north of Sandton went quickly with no traffic incidents as we were both keen to hit the course for a quick 9 holes on the Par 3 Tribute course at Legends Golf & Safari Resort before enjoying dinner at The Look Out Restaurant!! Legends is fantastic and is a real golfing delight, the Tribute course which features the top par 3’s from around the world (12th & 16th from Augusta, the Postage Stamp from Royal Troon and the 17th from TPC Sawgrass amongst the highlights) is an amazing creation. It’s great to actually play holes that most golfers only see on television.
The 18-hole signature course designed by top golfing professionals was a real treat too, we found it to be a friendly track with wide open fairways and generous greens for first time visitors. Legends offers fantastic Big Five safaris in the Entabeni Game Reserve and a host of other activities for families and corporate groups.
Euphoria which was designed by former world number one Annika Sorenstam is an easy 45-minute drive from Legends, once again the wonderful weather in the Waterberg played its hand and we were fortunate enough to get 18 holes in before the heat of the day took its toll. Euphoria golf course is more challenging than Legends but we found it to be in excellent condition and a very well thought out layout; this course will be enjoyed by low and high handicaps! Be sure to go up the European style cable car to enjoy lunch on the mountain overlooking the golf course!
Our last stop on this trip was Elements Private Golf Reserve and we certainly left the best for last! Renowned South African golf designer Peter Matkovich has done an excellent job in using the natural lie of the land to create an absolute masterpiece. It’s refreshing to see such care being taken in keeping the conditioning at a level where few courses in South Africa can compete. We found this to be a challenging layout but one that we would want to play over and over again! The key to success at Elements is to plot your way around, don’t even think you can overpower this course with your driver!
The Waterberg is going to be South Africa’s next big golf region, and you heard it from Southern Africa Travel first!!
