The Colourful Spier Estate

The Colourful Spier Estate

Situated in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands, the Spier Estate really is a destination in itself.  Not only do they offer award-winning wine, luxury accommodation and a variety of dining experiences but guests are able to touch a cheetah, stroll through the craft market, get up close and personal with an eagle, go for a walk, ride a horse or simply marvel at contemporary South African art in all forms.

On arrival at the hotel we were warmly welcomed and shown around by the delightful Guest Relations Supervisor, Lucia. The Spier Hotel reminded me of a Mediterranean village. Guest rooms are centred around six private courtyards each with its own swimming pool; for guests preferring a more social experience there is also a larger, main pool. Room types available include Standard Rooms, Superior Rooms and Suites and I would recommend requesting rooms on the first floor. Spier is extremely popular with families and the suites offer a comfortable option for a family traveling with children under 12, the hotel also offers a children’s activity centre and from what we saw it is an absolute hit with the younger guests.

The public areas are airy and bright and tastefully decorated in warm colours with intriguing South African artwork everywhere. The lounge area is clustered around a leather-clad bar where the friendly barmen wait to serve you. A pool menu is available and is reasonably priced plus the food is delicious. The restaurant next door offers breakfast, lunch and dinner that you may enjoy in the main dining area or in the conservatory. The hotel also offers a Camelot Spa with four treatment rooms. There are no water treatment rooms though.

The estate grounds are beautifully kept with large green lawns and big trees everywhere. You can walk along the river to the wine tasting centre, Moyo at Spier, the deli and picnic area. The Cheetah Outreach and Eagle Encounter is about a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

Dinner at Moyo was a very unique experience and we thoroughly enjoyed the lively atmosphere – a must for anyone staying here.
