Newspapers for Trees – Arbor Week

Arbor Day was first celebrated in South Africa in 1983. Later the National Government decided to extend the celebration of Arbor Day to National Arbor Week due to its popularity. From 1 to 7 September every year, South Africans are encouraged to participate in tree-planting events to improve the health of our environment.

This week, in support of Arbor Week, the Southern Africa Travel Team collected newspapers to swap for trees at a local garden centre. Stodels Nurseries offers their customers a free tree for every bag of newspapers received. They commit to recycle these newspapers and customers have a new tree to plant in their garden or community. Instead of claiming a free tree, the team donated their tree back to the nursery to use in a Trees4Schools project, which Stodels support.

Trees4Schools is a non-profit organisation that aims to plant as many trees and vegetable gardens as possible in local schools and orphanages. The schools are expected to take ownership of the gardens and ensure that they are well maintained, whereby increasing awareness among the youth about the importance of sustainable gardening and reducing each individual’s carbon footprint.
