Southern Africa Travel’s 2010 FIFA World Cup

Southern Africa Travel’s 2010 FIFA World Cup

For us at Southern Africa Travel it was a 2-3 year build up starting with Soccerex in 2007. We networked, found various international partners who were keen to work with us and then set about putting everything in place. We booked out whole hotels (some of which were not even built as yet) , we charted planes and booked buses and guides, restaurants and day-tours. The preparation was long and arduous, many hours of operational meetings and planning. And then suddenly it arrived on our doorstep like a hurricane, out of control. No more preparation could have helped us. It was what we had to deal with on the day that was the difference between success and failure. FiFA took over airports and parking areas and we were left to find a new way, this on the days when we were moving 1000 pax in 7 charter planes to airports around SA.

Well it was tough, 2-3 hrs sleep per night for 3 weeks, but we delivered and got every single customer to the games and back to home base in Cape Town.

Giltedge where fortunate enough to have hosted corporate and individual clients from Mexico, USA, Australia, UK , Germany and Ghana.

The following statistics tell the story:

  • 20 000 room nights booked in 4 and 5 star hotels Cape Town and Johannesburg
  • We delivered 1000 Coach Charter Movements throughout the tournament (that’s about 30 per day!)
  • 75 Charter Flights to and from matches
