Chobe Region Tours & Safaris

Tours to Chobe are mostly centred on game viewing as this 12 000 km² (4500 squ mi) national park is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, including the Big Five of Africa.

Game Viewing in Chobe - where vast herds of game roam

The Chobe region of northern Botswana is famous for its huge number of migratory elephants, with over 40 000 elephants roaming this wilderness area.

Of the Big Five you can expect to sight lion, leopard, buffalo and of course elephant, but rhino is a little trickier, as is often the case on safari. Chobe is also home to endangered African Wild Dogs, hyenas, zebras, giraffes and an assortment of antelopes, such as impalas, kudus and wildebeest, all of which are commonly sighted. The Savuti plains of Chobe are known for superb predator sightings, including cheetahs.

When visiting Chobe you’ll embark on game drives in a 4x4 safari vehicle, essential for getting around during the wet months.

Chobe River Sunset Cruises

A top highlight on any tour to Chobe is a sunset river cruise on the Chobe River. These relaxing sunset boat cruises generally include sundowners and snacks, and are an excellent way to spot the plentiful birds and game along the river. When it comes to Chobe cruises there are two broad types - the large boats with a noisy, party-cruise vibe and then there are smaller, quieter cruises which are better for spotting birds and animals.

Bird Watching in Chobe

Chobe is an excellent bird watching destination, hosting some 350 bird species.

The riverine zones are best for spotting a variety of feathered creatures, drawn to the Chobe River and Savute channel. Along the Chobe egrets, skimmers, hornbills, storks and plovers, among others, are often seen. Raptors are commonly spotted in Savute, from hawks and eagles to falcons and kestrels.

Chobe Safari Destination Combinations

Chobe is easily combined with the beautiful wilderness areas of the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve in northern Botswana. These pristine areas are within easy reach of Chobe Park and compliment the game park perfectly.

Another nearby safari highlight that makes a winning combination with Chobe is the nearby Victoria Falls.

Several Chobe tour options incorporate both the watery wonderland of the delta and the mighty Vic Falls, in either Zambia or Zimbabwe.

Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans, the wild Caprivi Strip of Namibia and the South Luangwa National Park of Zambia are some of the top safari destinations nearby which are also explored on Chobe Tours. There are also exciting Southern African tour options taking in the world-renowned Kruger Park and other leading destinations in South Africa, along with Botswana’s Chobe Park.
