Okavango Delta Luxury Holidays

Journey to the Okavango, and spend a few magical days in remote luxury surrounded by the clear streams and lily-covered lagoons of the world's largest inland delta. Located in the north-east of Botswana, this unique system of wetlands and waterways is dotted with hundreds of forested islands, where just a handful of lodges and tented camps offer the chance to experience one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa.

Explore the shallow channels of the Okavango Delta in a mokoro or traditional dug-out canoe. Gliding along calm waterways without the distracting noise of an engine, your senses sharpen and you notice the finer details of the delta: the sound of water gurgling by, the colourful flash of a malachite kingfisher, a tiny painted reed frog clinging to a stand of reeds ... . No doubt you’ll see bigger game too, but to get close to the Okavango’s larger creatures (and there are plenty of them) we’d highly recommend game drives on the islands.

Moremi Game Reserve protects a third of the Okavango and includes vast tracts of dry land such as Chief's Island, the largest island in the delta. Chief's is a phenomenal big game destination: herds of zebra, red lechwe and impala graze the open grasslands; the region is famous for its predators with excellent sightings of lion and spotted hyena; and the island is home to the only rhino found in the delta - both black and white. There are three camps on Chief's Island; we'd recommned award-winning Chief's Camp or opulant and stylish Mombo Camp.

Surrounding Moremi is a collection of private concessions which allow activities that are not premitted in a national park such as night drives - increasing your chances of seeing leopard! - and walking safaris. Another distinct advantage of staying in a private concession is that guides can drive off road, getting you right up close to your sightings. Many of Okavango Delta's most exclusive properties are found in these concessions including Jao Camp's nine tents each with a private sala and spectacular views, intimate and romantic Baines' Camp and Vumbura Plains with its contemporary design and ultra-luxurious suites.

Botswana's Okavango Delta region is best known for:

Mokoro Boat Safaris
A mokoro safari is the perfect way to explore the Okavango's shallow waterways. Sit back and relax as your guide poles you along (think of a gondolier), keeping an eye out for the twitching ears of hippo or elephant on the reed-fringed shore.

View the Delta From the Air
Only when you fly over the Okavango can you appreciate the sheer size of this true water wilderness. Take to the skies on a scenic helicopter flight that follows the delta's channels and waterways - a definite must for keen photographers!

Phenomenal Birdlife
The Okavango Delta is a phenomenal birding destination with over 450 species recorded. Sightings range from rare and endangered birds such as the wattled cranes and Pel’s fishing owls to kingfishers hovering over the wetlands and herons fishing in the shallows.

Off the Beaten Track in the Okavango Delta:

Linyanti Concession
Wild and remote, the Linyanti Wetlands are protected by three private concessions with just a few luxurious lodges each offering an exclusive safari experience and game viewing that equale that of the Okavango Delta.

Elephant-Back Safari
A couple of camps including Abu Camp offer elephant-back safaris: trundle over land and through shallow water, looking out for animals for the gently-swaying vantage point of an elephant's back - an unforgettable experience!
