A great way to experience the Okavango Delta is by mokoro, these ‘canoes’ allow you access to places unreachable by other means of transport, they are also relatively unobtrusive so your chances of spotting game at very close distances are higher.

Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta, and it is perhaps for this reason that it is known as the ‘tourism capital’ of Botswana.
The village was established in 1915 as the tribal capital of the Batawana people. Since then, it’s always had a reputation as a bit of a ‘Wild West’ town serving the local cattle ranching and hunting operations. The name, Maun, is derived from the San (Bushman) word maung meaning ‘place of the short reeds’.
Although Maun is officially still classified as a village, it has rapidly developed through tourism along the Thamalakane River and now boasts shopping centres, hotels, lodges and car hire.
Still, Maun has not lost its rural charm and you will see plenty of donkeys and goats on the roads. You may even see some lechwe antelope grazing on the quieter riverbanks.
There is plenty of accommodation in Maun itself, but most travellers pass through without overnighting. The intersections are littered with signs for all the air-charter and safari operations that are based here, particularly near the airport.
From Maun it’s just a short flight into the very heart of the Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve.
