Kenya Holidays & African Safaris

Kenya is often considered to be the birthplace of the luxury African safari experience and remains a popular destination. Let Southern Africa Travel take you there on one of our luxurious tours.

Home to extraordinary safari experiences

Kenya. The name alone evokes the mysterious sense of adventure that has drawn so many to Africa to discover the timeless cultures, archaeological gems and the quintessential safari experience. The country lies north of Tanzania on the east coast of Africa, spanning the equator. You will find Ethiopia to the north, Somalia, the Indian Ocean to the east and Uganda to the west.

A visit to Kenya will inevitably begin or end in Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital city. In the southern part of Kenya you will discover the game-rich savannahs of the Amboseli and Tsavo regions. Amboseli Park is one of the best places to get up close to free roaming elephants in the wild, with the grassy plains hosting some of the largest elephants in Africa. Herds of elephants, featuring large bulls, roam before the impressive backdrop of snow-peaked Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. In Tsavo large herds of elephants, often covered in a fine layer of red dust, can be seen gracing the plains of Africa. Chyulu Hills National Park, a mystical landscape of dark lava scattered with colourful plants, lies between Amboseli and Tsavo

Undoubtedly one of the most legendary game parks in the world, the Masai Mara Game Reserve is famous for its exceptional sightings of Africa's Big Five animals. This scenic wildlife haven, located on Kenya’s western border lies on the ancient path of the Great Migration - a natural wonder of immense proportions, that stays with one forever. Witnessing the massive stampede of wildebeest, zebra and other antelopes migrating in the millions in search of fresh grazing, is an awe-inspiring sight. The sheer mass of moving animals driven by instinct is enough to impress even the most seasoned safari goer. Meru National Park offers an unspoilt and more remote wilderness experience, being located off-the-beaten-track. Meru was home to the famous lioness Elsa, when she was released back into the wild in the 1950’s.

A visit to Kenya's beautiful coastline compliments the ultimate African safari experiences of Kenya's game parks. Stretching over 480km's along east Africa, Kenya's coast offers soft white beaches lapped by the clear warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Watamu National Park, a very popular snorkelling and diving destination, encompasses a stetch of the lovely Kenyan coastline. The national park hosts some of the world's finest coral reefs, as well as being an excellent spot for big game fishing, as Ernest Hemingway discovered in the 1930's.

Kenya for You

There are two international airports in Kenya ensuring ease of access from all over the world. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi is the largest airport and the main arrival point for most visitors. Mombasa International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa mainly serves tourists and business travellers entering Kenya's coastal region. Kenya’s large reserves are easily accessible with daily shuttle flights from Nairobi’s regional Wilson Airport and there are also flights between the reserves and Mombassa.

Highlights on the Kenyan calendar include the whale shark season starting in February and off course the most incredible wildlife spectacle on earth, the annual great migration from June to October. Kenya is the perfect bush and beach destination.
