Recently opened Angama Mara has a remarkable location: balanced on the rim of Africa’s Great Rift Valley with views stretching out over Kenya's Maasai Mara plains. Once you’ve recovered from the view, you’ll notice the lodge’s incredible attention to detail. This is thanks to hands-on owners Steve and Nicky Fitzgerald who, during their time at the helm of andBeyond, helped build and operate over 60 lodges across Africa. And they’ve kept the best for last!
At Angama Mara it’s all about the view. The front of each tented suite is floor-to-ceiling glass so whether you’re lazing in bed or soaking in a bubble bath, you’ve always got the immensity of the Maasai Mara laid out before you. In the morning hot air balloons float gently by; a beautiful sight best viewed from a rocking chair on your private deck as your butler brings you orange juice, Kenyan coffee and a freshly baked treat.
The days’ activities are arranged around you. Start with breakfast on your deck, or set off early on a dawn game drive. Angama Mara has its own road down to the Mara Triangle. These vast grasslands offer superb game viewing with regular sightings of all of Africa’s Big 5 – lion, buffalo, elephant, rhino and leopard – along with ceetah, giraffe and plenty of other animals and birds.
Other activities include a guided walk with a Maasai warrior, a hot air balloon safari, and a picnic on the crest of the famous hill that features on the “Out of Africa” movie poster. Back at the lodge you can relax alongside the lovely swimming pool or sit with Maasai women while they bead beautiful jewellery. Evenings begin with a sunset cocktail in the Maasai boma, before sitting down to a table for two on your private deck or a delicious BBQ in the lantern-lit forest.
