The stuff of romantic legends and exotic dreams, Mozambique’s Quirimbas Archipelago stretches along the northern coastline of the country beginning opposite the town of Pemba on the mainland. Offering exclusive and private luxury accommodation on exquisite islands surrounded by the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean, the Quirimbas Archipelago has the makings of a dream.
The 32 coral islands that make up the archipelago are Mozambique’s hidden secret and so the destination sets the scene for an unforgettable luxury vacation. You will spend your days wandering deserted romantic beaches, paddling along the shoreline or enjoying sunset cruises in traditional dhows. The area is a diver’s paradise with unspoilt coral reefs filled with an abundance of brightly coloured tropical fish and in the deeper waters the masses of sail- and game fish await the eager angler.
All of the luxury accommodation on these beautiful islands offer superlative comforts from the decor to the service and including the gourmet culinary experiences available. Relax with spa treatments or by swimming in ocean water that reaches 30 degrees in summer, look forward to interacting with dolphins and unusual turtles while knowing that time slows down here and you will truly leave fully relaxed and rejuvenated.
Reach the Quirimbas Archipelago by chartered flight from Pemba which is linked by many scheduled flights to major airports in Southern Africa or contact us to combine your visit to these exquisite islands with an inland safari in Tanzania, South Africa or Kenya. This is a great year-round destination as the climate is tropical.
Diving Spots
Some of the world’s best diving spots are found in this part of the world where coral reefs have been undisturbed by man and the marine life is abundant in its biodiversity. Besides the tropical fish commonly found around coral reefs there are also many deep sea fish found in the area. You can choose from regular, wall and wreck dives to explore the marine underworld.
Ibo Island
This beautiful island, just to the north of Quirimba, has a fascinating history. It was once a major trading centre for silver, ivory and slaves amongst other things. Today you can explore a 200-year old ghost town on the island as well as 16th century forts and a cathedral.
Explore exceptional marine biodiversity
Quilailea Marine Sanctuary was the first area to be protected in the Quirimbas Archipelago and today it functions as a ‘nursery’ for green turtles that nest on the beach. It is also a sanctuary for humpback whales that rest in the channel with their young before beginning their migration to the south. More than 350 species of fish have been identified in the sanctuary making it one of the most biodiverse marine areas in the world.
