This beautifully designed lodge is set on a tea plantation, overlooking the Nyungwe rainforest. The largest mountain rainforest in Africa, Nyungwe is home to a colourful collection of birds, as well as 13 primate species including black and white colobus monkeys, golden monkeys and – the main attraction – chimpanzees.
Nyungwe Forest Lodge has 22 luxury rooms, each comfortable and modern with a private balcony looking onto the forest. The main lodge has fireplaces for chilly evenings, and out on the deck is a lovely rim-flow swimming pool and a boma for sunset drinks. Anyone with aching muscles after trekking can visit the lodge’s small spa, which has two treatment rooms and offers a range of massages.
The main activity at Nyungwe is chimpanzee trekking. Staying here you’re about a 45-minute drive from park headquarters, the starting point for chimp trekking as well as guided bird walks and forest canopy tours. Back at the lodge you can hike to a beautiful waterfall or go on a tour of the tea plantation.
But even with all these great activities you'll no doubt find that Nyungwe Forest Lodge is a great place to spend lazy afternoons unwinding in lush surroundings, while watching for colobus monkeys playing in the trees.
