Cape Town is one of the few cities in the world to host a wine route within its borders and the city bends around the Table Mountain National Park ensuring that you never have far to go if you are looking to immerse yourself in nature. The Cape region of South Africa is known for its wine and there are over 18 wine routes that stretch out in the surrounding area, beginning in the city itself in the Constantia Valley.
It is not only on Cape Town wine farms that you will discover the wealth of great food available in Cape Town. The rich mix of cultural influences from the European settlers, Asian slaves and African immigrants to the city means that you can eat whatever your heart desires. Try our Cape Malay bobotis or roties, superlative Indian restaurants, fine continental dining, South African fusion meals and local African delicacies. Take a culinary and wine tour to get the best out of your dining experience here.
Spend your days on Cape Town’s white sand beaches or leisurely driving around the dramatic peninsula over Chapman’s Peak and Ou Kaapse Weg, life is slightly slower on this side of the mountain so relax and go with the flow of the locals. In Cape Town city itself, there are museums to suit every taste, art galleries showcase old oils to conceptual works and some of the finest examples of contemporary African craft in the country are available to purchase.
Kirstenbosch Gardens and the Nature Reserves are only a short drive away from your luxury accommodation and provide a tranquil respite from shopping! Table Mountain
Climb Cape Town’s most iconic attraction, Table Mountain for a panoramic view of the city beneath. If you are feeling fit, take one of the many walking trails up the mountain or whip up to the top in the revolving cable cars. There is a restaurant on top but you are welcome to pack your own picnic, find the best views and feast on both the views and the contents of your basket!
Cape Point
Breathe in the pure air that flows straight from the Antarctic at Cape Point. Set in the Good Hope Nature Reserve, this is a fantastic spot to picnic, walk the well-laid trails, fish, swim and admire the outstanding views. The funicular will take you to the Point and you are welcome to walk to the old lighthouse site from there.
Victoria & Alfred Waterfront
Shop up a storm at the V&A Waterfront, a recreational hub located adjacent to a working harbour. This shopping Mecca is home to more than 400 shops, restaurants, pubs and coffee shops. The experience is one of the highlights of a trip to Cape Town. Trips to Robben Island and Seal Island leave from here or book on for a sunset cruise around the harbour.
Stroll through the Company’s Gardens
Pack a picnic lunch and head to the very heart of Cape Town, the Company’s Gardens. This is where it all began in the mid-1650s when Jan van Riebeeck was sent by the Dutch East Indies Company to set up a way station for passing ships. A favourite with locals for its tranquil escape from city life; it is also home to hundreds of inquisitive squirrels.
Visit the Bo-Kaap
Head into one of the oldest areas of Cape Town, the Bo-Kaap, with its cobbled stones and colourful flat-roofed houses and immerse yourself in this heritage destination. Originally the area was set aside for the slaves from Java in the 17th and 18th centuries; step back in time by visiting the museum and mosque and round off the experience with a delicious Cape Malay lunch in one of the local restaurants.
Take a Township Tour
Gain an intimate perspective on South African life by taking a ‘township’ tour. Visit the local schools and craft centres before having your fortune told by a sangoma (traditional healer) and finish off the day by stopping in at the colourful informal pubs, the shebeens to mix with the locals. An experience you will never forget.
Bishopscourt is arguably one of South Africa’s wealthiest suburbs, and with its prime location nestled in between Newlands and Constantia.
Home to Nelson Mandela, The British High Commissioner, The US ambassador and various other local and international celebrities, the suburb is synonymous with wealth, class and prestige. It is also as green and lush as it is affluent.
Bishopscourt has about 350 houses most of which stand on more than 3000 square metres of land. Huge Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian mansions stand on rolling lawns and landscaped gardens, with the spectacular mountain forming the ideal backdrop.
The area is within 20 minutes from the city centre, and is close to a number of attractions, including Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cavendish Square Shopping Center, Newlands Sports Stadium and a range of restaurants, shops, bars and boutiques.
Property prices are extremely high due to the exclusive and prestigious nature of the area and the size of the houses. Residents are typically established professionals with families, as well as politicians and personalities.
There are a number of 5-star accommodation options in this distinguished suburb, all of which offer an unsurpassable service standard and top-rate facilities and features.
For a taste of Cape Town's finest, Bishopscourt is a must-see on your luxury South African holiday.
Bishopscourt's well-paved, hilly avenues are low on traffic and, especially when the South Easter makes things unpleasant elsewhere, popular with recreational cyclists.. or in this case longboard skateboarders.
Bo Kaap (meaning ‘above the Cape’ in Afrikaans) is also known as the Malay Quarter, and is the oldest suburb in Cape Town.
The suburb is a thriving Muslim community, and was largely left untouched during the forced removals in the Apartheid era. Original cobbled paving and brilliantly coloured traditional Malay houses can still be seen in most parts of the suburb, which give it a special appeal.
Bo Kaap is bordered by Tamboerskloof on the city bowl side, with Military Road forming the border. On the other side, Bo Kaap is bordered by De Waterkant. It is a few minutes walk to the CBD, and situated on the slopes of Signal Hill.
One of the busiest roads in Bo Kaap is Whale Street, which is where you will be able to sample some fine Cape delicacies at the Spice Market, and also visit a community arts project called Monkey Biz.
If you are lucky, you may get a glimpse of the legendary Bo Kaap ice-cream van, which runs exclusively through the Bo Kaap area during summer afternoons and can be heard from miles away.
The area is fairly safe, however it is recommended to arrange a tour of the area through a travel broker such as Giltedge Travel. This will ensure that you don’t miss a thing, and those steep cobbled roads are easier to manage by car.
A pictorial overview giving a quick impression of what to expect in this unique village perched on the slopes of Signal Hill above the city centre.
Originally a turn of the century prisoner-of-war camp, and then a sparsely settled holiday village, Camps Bay has morphed into the vibrant epicentre of Cape Town's glamorous Atlantic Seaboard, a summertime playground for trendy locals and the international jetset.
A good visual overview of the location beneath Lions Head and Table Mountain. Get a feel for the vibe you can expect upon arrival in Camps Bay. Come to sun yourself on the beach amidst bronzed bods from all over the world, or enjoy a sundowner as the sun sinks into the endless Atlantic skyline.
The City Bowl area of Cape Town is made up of several popular suburbs including Tamboerskloof and Oranjezicht, as well as trendy Kloof Street.
The city bowl is the central hub of Cape Town, and gets its name from the bowl-like shelter of the mountain, that wraps around this part of the city.
With the CBD and foreshore on the ocean side, the city bowl is nestled on the slopes of Lions Head on the mountain side.
Main areas in the city bowl include Tamboerskloof, which is a quiet, leafy suburb which runs above trendy Kloof Street and through Kloof Nek on the one side and Buitengracht Road on the other side.
Oranjezicht is an affluent area situated near Cape Town’s popular dog-friendly park, De Waal Park, and runs along the foot of the mountain.
Popular activities in the city bowl include hiking up Lions Head and Signal Hill, breakfasts at the Daily Deli in Tamboerskloof, leisurely days at De Waal Park, lunching at one of the bistros or restaurants in Kloof or Long Street, shopping at the Lifestyle Centre on Kloof Street and more.
The city bowl is the most central part of Cape Town and is within walking distance to hotspots such as Long Street, the South African Museum, Waterfront busses, art galleries, the Company Gardens and many other key attractions in the city centre.
For a taste of the trendy, upmarket culture in the city bowl, be sure to add a visit to this great area as part of your luxury Southern Africa travel plans.
Built by Italian prisoners of war during World War 1, this is Cape Town's own mini-slice of the Amalfi Coast, minus the ancient villages running up the cliff-faces of course. The road truly is one of the world's most dramatic pieces of tarmac. An excellent route should you be travelling South from the city towards Cape Point. Watch out for the cyclists, or better yet, hire a bike in Hout Bay and join them for a more visceral experience.
A group of friends explore Chappies in convoy and the shoot dramatic cliff-top scenery along the way.
Constantia is a green, leafy suburb situated in the rich Constantia Valley.
With its winding, tree-lined avenues and beautiful homesteads, Constantia has an air of distinguished charm and old-world glamour.
Widely known for its excellent wineries, Constantia was predominantly a farming area until fairly recent years. The rich and water-friendly environment is ideal for growing grapes and crops, and the land is highly fertile in the valley.
Attractions in the Constantia area include a top-market shopping centre called Constantia Village, wine estates, an array of fine restaurants, Cecelia Forest, horse riding stables, craft markets and many other highlights.
Real estate in Constantia is fairly high priced, with large Victorian, Cape Dutch and Georgian homesteads set on enormous plots with beautiful gardens. Cape Town’s ‘old money’ has lived in the area for generations, and as such the area is fairly affluent.
Situated just 20 minutes from the city centre, Constantia is a beautifully scenic suburb offering a range of activities to enjoy and a highlight of any luxury South African holiday.
Michael Olivier visits Groot Constantia, South Africa's oldest and grandest wine estate, for a tasting session.
Kalk Bay is an 18th century fishing village in the 'Deep South' of the peninsula. Once the end of the line for road-going travellers heading South to Simonstown, the harbour served as a launch for those needing to get to the larger port at Simonstown, about ten kilometers to the South. Today it is a bustling arts and crafts and foodie destination. The local population is, and always has been a cultural melting pot made up of the original fishing village community, descended from freed slaves, and the boho towns folk who live on the other side of Boyes Drive. There are many excellent restaurants, with the inimitable Olympia Cafe, Harbour House and Polana being standouts.
Kalk Bay Reef forms a neat little left hander that is akin to a miniature version of Hawaii's famous Pipeline. Be prepared to fight for waves on a good day though.
A tourist-shot clip giving a good visual overview of the village on a lazy Sunday morning - an excellent time to visit. In summer it's best to come early to avoid the crowds.
Kirstenbosch is the worlds foremost botanical mecca for fynbos enthusiasts. Fynbos is the colloquial term for the Cape floral genus, which is internationally unique to the Western Cape region. The gardens are a fantastic picnic spot tucked beneath the southerly slopes of Table Mountain. More recently it has also evolved into the Mother City's most popular outdoor music venue. More adventurous spirits will want to take advantage of the challenging hiking routes up Table Mountain via Nursery Rivine and Skeleton Gorge.
This Smartguide video provides a fairly objective overview of the main features of these internationally renowned gardens.
Kommetjie was named after ‘the Kom’, which is the natural basin along the coast making the perfect harbour for small boats, situated near to the lighthouse.
The suburb is quiet and not as well-known as Hout Bay or other coastal towns, however the pace of life is easy and relaxed, and many locals prefer the peace and quiet that Kommetjie offers.
Kommetjie is a great bird-watching area, with the Kom being ranked as one of the top birding spots in Cape Town. Sightings of seabirds are prime here, and bird lovers come from all over the city to spot gulls and other pelagic seabirds.
The area is also a prime surfing spot but the water is cold and not ideal for swimming.
The commercial areas in Kommetjie are fairly small, however there is a shopping centre and a number of good restaurants and coffee shops situated in the town.
The drive to Kommetjie offers breathtaking views of the ocean and mountain, and although it takes about 30 minutes from the city centre, it is well worth the effort.
Overall, a day in Kommetjie is sure to be a memorable part of your tailor-made luxury holiday and is highly recommended.
Various perspectives of the village shot from Slangkop Peak, Noordhoek, the village itself - basically an all-round overview.
Shot at tow-in spot Sunset Reef, Kommetjie also has more user-friendly swells at the popular Long Beach further about a kilometer further South down the beach.
With breathtaking sea and mountain views, the suburb feels far away from Cape Town and has a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere.
The suburb is accessed from Hout Bay, and is situated along the False Bay coastline.
Houses in Noordhoek are large and spacious, and most of the prime real estate is situated along the mountain and into the forests.
There is a strong village vibe, with craft stalls, art galleries and boutiques as well as restaurants, coffee shops and the popular Red Herring tavern.
With its lush forests and beautiful mountain environment, it is sometimes easy to forget that Noordhoek also has a beautiful beach, which has clear waters and vast stretches of white sand.
A must-do during your luxury South African vacation, a visit to Noordhoek would not be complete without a horse ride along Noordhoek beach.
Some stunning footage of pristeen Noordhoek Beach near the "Hoek", or 'corner' - popular with surfers - where the coastline rises sharply up Chapmans Peak.
Table Mountain - world heritage site and defining feature of the unmistakable Cape Town skyline. Walk up, take the cable car or mountain bike your way down the lower slopes. This is an experience every visitor the mother city has to incorporate into their stay. Be aware the weather on top is famously changeable, and at times a dense 'table cloth' of cloud can arrive in minutes out of a clear blue sky.
Ok, this is technically next door to Table Mountain, but I think you'll agree the results are pretty incredible. Thanks to the guys at celeb-favourite Ellerman House for putting this together.
The team are at it again, this time it's a more conventional mountain visit, heading up via the cable car. This vid celebrates Table Mountain's inauguration in December 2012, as one of the seven wonders of nature.
Lukas Irmler takes his highline on a hike up Table Mountain for some sunrise action high above the city. Crazy and jawdropping stuff.
As one of the most sought-after areas in Cape Town, the Waterfront is booming and is a prime development area.
A fairly young suburb, the Waterfront is famous for its shopping centre, as well as attractions such as the Two Oceans Aquarium, the Clock Tower Shopping Centre, the Scratch Patch and its marina.
A number of five-star hotels, including the world-renowned Cape Grace, as well as a range of restaurants, bars and pubs make the Waterfront one of the top travel experiences in South Africa.
Residential property is extremely high-priced, with Cape Town’s elite, as well as international residents, taking key position in the property market.
Luxurious quay-side apartments with private boat moorings overlook the bay and offer premier coastal living just a few minutes away from the city centre.
The Waterfront area is always humming with activity, in all seasons. Summer is an especially busy and vibrant time, with visitors from all over the world mingling with locals and enjoying live music, sea views, ocean breezes and world-class shopping.
The Waterfront is easily accessed by vehicle (self-drive) or bus, however planning your trip with a travel broker such as Giltedge Travel will ensure that you get the most out of your trip and experience as much as possible during your visit to the Waterfront.
A good video overview of this busy, cosmopolitan shopping, drinking and eating destination.
Woodstock has developed into a creative and foodie hub in the past ten years. On the fringes of what was once District Six, there is a well-established coloured community here that must now share the space with trendy media types, art galleries and the weekend crowds making the pilgrimage to The Biscuit Mill market.
Some more Biscuit Mill action. Kick your Saturday off with a round of fresh West Coast Oysters, served up here by the inimitable Mother Shuckers.
The Biscuit Mill is a super busy and vibrant Saturday morning foodie hangout. An must-visit for anyone who enjoys excellent locally produced food, beer, cider and wines.
