Brush up on your culinary skills while on holiday at African Relish, a leading cooking school located in Prince Albert, a picturesque village in the Western Cape region of South Africa. African Relish, with its four farm-style cottages, some of them dating back 150 years, promises you comfortable and classy country accommodation plus the opportunity to partake in their sought-after cooking classes.
Nestled between breathtaking mountain passes and Prince Albert, the self-catering country cottage accommodation of African Relish offers a family friendly base from which to explore the surrounding semi-desert Karoo. Stay in absolute comfort in these quirkily decorated cottages with their gorgeous linens on the large beds, enormous bathrooms with deep Victorian-style baths and deep, cool verandas. Choose from cottages set on a smallholding on the outskirts of the town or those set in the heart of the quaint village.
African Relish boasts a premier cooking school specialising in Karoo Cuisine with courses overseen by executive chef Vanie Padayachee, voted one of South Africa’s Top 10 young chefs. There is a restaurant open to the public on Friday and Saturday nights with a delicious menu that derives its produce from their own beautiful gardens, showpieces of indigenous and exotic fruits, organic vegetables and herbs.
There are other artisanal producers in the area from the local dairy with its award-winning cheeses to the only vineyard found in this part of the country. Feast on local delicacies such as fresh fruit, Karoo lamb, olives, olive oils and cheeses. Explore the area on foot with botanical tours, head up the Swartberg Pass to look for San rock art or take to the skies in a hot air balloon for the best views of all.
African Relish – a culinary experience awaits you in the Western Cape region of South Africa
African Relish has four farm-style cottages to offer you, two of them are set on a small holding in an indigenous landscaped garden with a small pool-dam for swimming and the other two are located in the heart of the village. All are self-catering with fully equipped kitchens and fireplaces. Relax in the comfortable spacious lounges of the cottages, all uniquely decorated with the amenities you will need for a great stay including air conditioning. All of the cottages have their own gardens and private verandas.
There are several restaurants in the vicinity and the African Relish cooking school which is laid out around a beautifully fragrant garden filled with roses and lavender besides the organic produce that is used in the restaurant and cooking school. There is also a swimming pool at the African Relish cooking school.
There is plenty to do and see in and around the pretty Karoo town of Prince Albert. Explore the surrounding attractions such as the San rock art found in the Swartberg Pass accompanied by an experienced palaeontologist or take the Botanical Walk with a guide to explain the flora and fauna found along the way.
Food is a big deal in Prince Albert, home to many artisanal producers, you can tour Gay’s Guernsey Dairy to learn how cheese is made and stock up their award-winning products and, of course, African Relish is home to a premier cooking school offering specialised courses. They run an inspiring series of week-end courses ranging from Pickles, Preserves & Relishes to Indian fusion sessions, bread making week-ends and more. Contact Southern Africa Travel for more information on what is coming up at African Relish.
You can visit the only wine estate in the arid region of the Karoo, Bergwater Vineyards, for a wine tasting experience of note. Join the local historian and storyteller for a pre-dinner walk through the streets of the village looking for ghosts, rumoured to still occupy some of the historic houses in Prince Albert. And for an overall view of this beautiful area, head up into the skies in a hot air balloon to float over the region.
African Relish is based in the historic village of Prince Albert at the foot of the Swartberg Pass in the Western Cape region of South Africa. Prince Albert is located 400km from both Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
