The Experience

Experience the extravagant elegance of rail travel on the most luxurious trains in the world. Rovos Rail’s unique train and air safaris through the heart of Africa combining some of the most magnificent scenery with the glamour and excitement of the golden age of rail and air travel. The three Rovos' trains are remodeled classical-style locomotives, carrying up to 72 passengers each. Guests get to stay in the world's most accommodating suites on board a train. The spacious bedroom cars are fitted with finely crafted wooden panels and classical Edwardian-era finishes, coupled with the modern amenities and facilities of a world-class hotel. Each of the four Royal Suites has its own private lounge area and features a full en-suite bathroom with shower and Victorian bath.

Each Deluxe Suite has a lounge area and private bathroom with a shower, while the Pullman Suites have a room with a bench seat during the day that converts to double or twin bunk in the evening. They also have en-suite bathrooms with shower. Colonial-style furnishings and classical interiors create a gracious and elegant ambience in the lounge, dining and observation cars of these grand old trains. Choose from a series of train or air journeys lasting from 24 hours to a fortnight. Train journeys include the two-week Dar es Salaam Sojourn, the Cape Town to Pretoria two-day trip, the two and a half day Game Safari between Pretoria and Durban, the two-day Meander from Pretoria to Victoria Falls, the 24-hour train ride between Cape Town and George, the seven-day Namibian Special, the nine-day Collage journey between Pretoria, Kruger National Park, Durban and Cape Town, the exciting nine-day Golf Safari or the 13-day long Southern Africa Air Safari.


There are two beautifully rebuilt classic Rovos Rail trains, each for a maximum of 72 passengers accommodated in the most spacious train suites in the world. With fine wood panelling, period Edwardian finishes, as well as every modern convenience and comfort, the air-conditioned suites for two people offer the option of twin or double beds. There are three types of suite on Rovos Rail. The Royal Suites each have their own private lounge area and full en-suite bathroom with shower and Victorian bath. The Deluxe Suites each have a lounge and bathroom with shower.The Pullman Suites have a room with a bench seat that converts to double or twin beds at night for sleeping, and an en-suite bathroom with shower. Each of the Rovos Rail trains features two large dining cars, comfortably accommodating over 70 guests between the two of them.

These luxurious passenger trains have dedicated Observation Cars located at the back of the trains, where guests can relax and watch the scenery go by.  A unique feature of the Observation Cars is the enlarged windows and open-air balconies. The second last coach on each of the trains is reserved for smoking and houses a cosy cigar lounge area. At the centre of the train, when numbers dictate, there is a non-smoking Lounge Car, which houses the Gift Shop. Rovos Rail is based at Capital Park in Pretoria, inside a carefully refurbished locomotive rail yard shed. This privately owned railway station, the only one of its kind in South Africa, also houses a museum dedicated to the history of rail, along with all the necessary equipment and facilities required to run these luxury trains like a dream.

The two Rovos Rail trains travel across South Africa as well as to Victoria Falls and Dar Es Salaam.

Rovos Rail is located at Capital Park, Pretoria, in an old-fashioned locomotive shed, which has been lovingly refurbished. South Africa's only private railway station, it also houses a railway museum and all the facilities required for the trains to run smoothly.
