Limpopo and the Lowveld regions invite you to come and explore a land of legend and romance. Hikers, climbers, bikers and nature lovers are drawn to the spectacular mountain scenery in the Lowveld and those looking for luxury African safari experiences come for the mostly malaria-free game reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and private nature reserves found here.
Travel the Ivory Route, along Limpopo’s northern border shared with Botswana and Zimbabwe, and named in honour of the great herds of elephant that once wandered these ancient trails. Dip down to the north-east of the province and discover the lands of the Venda people centred around the town of Thohoyandou. Immerse yourself in African art; the Venda people are famous for their original creations as are the Ndebele with their unique geometric designs that are commonly seen on houses in the region. Myths and legends are bound up with queens, secret lakes and sacred forests; you cannot help the magic of Limpopo rubbing off on.
For Big Five game sightings head east to the Kruger National Park and the surrounding private game reserves where you can spend your nights in a luxury tented-lodges surrounded by towering mountains and ancient fossils or upmarket safari lodges. Game viewing is not the only reason that you will return to Limpopo, this is also classic outdoor adventure country that will appeal to everybody.
Take a tandem skydive if you are feeling brave, abseil down a cliff or go white water rafting on the Orange River. For the tamer at heart, bush walks, fantastic fishing spots and bird spotting will have you returning to the region.
Head west from the Greater Kruger Park region towards the Lowveld with its great natural beauty and the majestic Waterberg Mountains. The area surrounding the Waterberg Mountain Range is breathtakingly beautiful and invites you to explore it via the Waterberg Meander, routes that pass by destinations of great cultural, archaeological and biological diversity.
The contrast between the vast open landscapes, mountain vistas and sparse vegetation of thorn trees and grasslands with the lush forests, trout-filled rivers and waterfalls of the Limpopo and Lowveld region is alluring. Choose a classic African luxury safari adventure for memorable experiences and a touch of the African magic. Contact the Southern Africa Travel team today.
The Kruger National Park
Visit South Africa’s premier game-viewing destination, the Kruger National Park. It is part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park encompassing land in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Home to the Big Five plus many more mammals, reptiles, birds and insects, the Kruger National Park is a favourite African safari destination.
The Waterberg Biosphere
Meander through the different routes in the Waterberg Biosphere, this UNESCO-recognised conservation area is the only savannah biosphere reserve in the world and home to a diverse range of plant and animal species.
Go back in time
Head back into history at Mapungubwe, a World Heritage Site because of the significance of what was discovered there. The finding of gold, iron artefacts, pottery and glass beads point to the existence of a once mighty city, perhaps the capital of an African king.
Explore the home of the mythical python
Head to Lake Funduduzi in the Thathe Vondo Forest for a dose of surreal mystery, the lake is sacred to the Venda as they believe that it is the home of the mythical python and white crocodile. The python is regarded as the god of fertility and young Venda maidens will perform the famous Domba-python dance on the banks of the lake.
The Modjadji Nature Reserve
Visit the home of the BaLobedu people’s Rain Queen in a landscape of untouched bushveld, ancient baobab trees filled with an abundance of wild life. The people are duty bound to protect this sacred space while the Rain Queens are famous for their ability to call rains when needed.
Falling within the Waterberg Savannah Biosphere Reserve in the North of South Africa, Welgevonden Private Game Reserve consists of over 40 000 hectares of prime Malaria-free Waterberg game sanctuary and is home to spectacular scenery, an impressive variety of fauna and flora, immensely interesting cultural and geological history, excellent Big Five game viewing and bird-viewing in the lush green of summer.
During 1990 the Waterberg Nature Conservancy situated in the Limpopo Province was established to conserve more than 150 000 hectares of indigenous bushveld. The aim of establishing the conservancy was to maximize the area’s potential for sustainable development, conservation, and social upliftment.
The region has become one of the major conservation and tourism areas in the country and was awarded International Biosphere status by UNESCO in 2001.
It is the first savannah biosphere reserve to be recognized by UNESCO in Southern Africa.
A premier wild life sanctuary in South Africa, Welgevonden Private Game Reserve, was also recently opened to the Marakele National Park enlarging this already spectacular Waterberg sanctuary to over 100 000 hectares of prime game reserve.
The reserve now easily compares in wilderness size, game viewing and principles of conservation management to the likes of the Madikwe Game Reserve and The Greater Kruger National Park.
An easy two and a half hour drive, or a quick 45-minute flight from Johannesburg into one of either two conveniently located airstrips makes Welgevonden one of the most easily accessible Malaria-free game reserves in the country.
