Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa’s largest private game reserve, covering an area of over 100,000 hectares (approximately 247,000 acres). Owned by the Oppenheimer family, Tswalu’s vision is to restore the Kalahari to itself. Tswalu has superlative game and offers sightings of some of Southern Africa’s rarest and most extraordinary wildlife.
The Motse, nestles at the foot of the Korannaberg mountains, facing the grasslands of the Kalahari. Built of local stone, rich red clay and traditional Kalahari thatch, the Motse (“village” in Tswana) was recently redesigned by world-renowned Boyd Ferguson. The lodge accommodates no more than 20 guests and suites define an elegant, barefoot luxury.
Elevated decks and elegant lounges provide guests with an inviting space to meet and share their day’s safari adventures. An infinity pool offers an endless view over the savannahs and a secluded spa is designed to complete your total relaxation.
Each game drive is filled with possibility. Your guide and tracker team share their passion and knowledge as you explore the fascinating scenery of the Kalahari. Evening safaris are especially exciting as the Kalahari comes alive with more elusive creatures such as aardvark, aardwolf, bat-eared foxes and brown hyena. Experience the untamed beauty of the Kalahari from horseback or spend time exploring the many wonders on foot offering a different perspective on this vast land.
Children are most welcome at Tswalu, the Motse. Two family suites ensure your comfort and activities are tailor-made to ensure young and old are kept enthralled.
Tswalu, the Motse offers six standard suites and two family suites, each accommodating four guests.
Each suite comprises a spacious bedroom with an open fire, a sumptuous en-suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor shower, and a large dressing and study area. Your private sun deck overlooks a waterhole and the changing Kalahari animals it attracts.
Two family suites offers two separate bedroom suites with their own en-suite bathrooms, separated by an expansive living room again leading on to a shady, private terrace.
The lodge offers a walk-in wine cellar stocked with South African wines, a mezzanine library with satellite TV, literature & artifacts and the Tswalu Foundation Gift Shop – supporting important research on the reserve.
Laze around the outdoor heated swimming pool or indulge in a treatment at the Sanctuary Spa & Gym.
Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is situated in the heart of the Northern Cape Province, some 300 kilometres north-west of Kimberley and 270 kilometres north-east of Upington. Johannesburg lies 560 kilometres to the east and Cape Town 850 kilometres to the south.
The nearest town is Kuruman, famous for the Kuruman Eye and Moffat Mission from which Dr Livingstone set off into what was then deepest Africa. Tswalu is close to the border with Botswana and within easy driving distance of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. As such, Tswalu represents the gateway to the splendour of the Kalahari.
We recommend making use of the private scheduled charters offered daily from Cape Town or Johannesburg international airports directly onto Tswalu Kalahari Reserve’s own private tarred airstrip. Flights depart at 11h00 and 13h00 respectively. The Cape Town return flight departs from Tswalu at 13h30 with a flying time to Cape Town of around two hours. The Johannesburg return flight departs from Tswalu at 15h00 with a flying time of 1 hour 30 minutes to Johannesburg.
Alternatively guests can also take a scheduled SA Airlink or SA Express flight to Upington or Kimberley. Onward charter flights from Upington and Kimberley are then arranged.
Guests may also drive to Tswalu Kalahari Reserve.
