The Experience

Gondwana Lodge, named after the breakaway supercontinent, is a fantastic family destination. This luxury lodge is set in the spacious Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in South Africa’s Garden Route region and offers comfortable, relaxed accommodation for those looking for a special African safari experience.

The twelve luxury suites of this thatched Karoo homestead look out over the lawns, plains, Bellair Dam and onto the Anysberg Mountains setting the scene for a relaxing break. Gondwana takes a special effort to ensure that children have a fantastic safari experience by offering a tailored ‘Kids on Safari’ programme as well as a host of other social and sporting activities. The lodge is fenced off from free-roaming animals so is completely secure for children.

Sanbona is home to the only free-roaming white lions in the world as well as host of Africa’s main wildlife attractions such as leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe as well as elephant and buffalo. Your days and nights will pass in a blur of fun activities such as game drives, guided walks, tutored stargazing and superlative meals.

Activities

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is one of few places in the world that is actively trying to breed the rare white lion for reintroduction into the wild. So, when you are out on game drives in the early morning and evening, keep a sharp eye out for these distinctive animals. All of the expected big name players can be found here from lions, rhino, buffalo and leopard to the elephant. There are a host of other animals including small and large antelope, zebra and wildebeest. With more than 200 species of birds in the region including African Fish Eagles and breeding pairs of Black Eagles, Gondwana Lodge is a favourite with bird lovers.

Immerse yourself in the beauty and diversity of the African bush on guided walking tours through unique eco-systems such as the renosterveld, mountain fynbos and other indigenous floral systems. Along the way you will visit some of the seven recorded San rock art sites that have been found; these rock paintings date back more than 3 500 years to the original inhabitants of the area and depict their rituals and spiritual beliefs. Find out more about the San when stargazing at night as they had specific mythologies around the African constellations.

For children there is an extensive range of options, both indoor and outdoor entertainment and activities are supplied. They can choose the ‘Kids on Safari’ programme which includes a guided trail through the gardens where they will learn about the animals on the reserve as well as how to identify them by their tracks and more. When they visit the San rock art sites they will have the opportunity to learn how to create their own rock art and back at the lodge there is a host of social and sporting activities to partake in from face painting, clay making to stargazing. The communal rooms are well-stocked with puzzles, games and children’s books and DVD’s.

Facilities

The twelve rooms or suites at this luxury lodge are divided into eight with king beds and the remaining four with twin beds. It is possible to book interleading rooms if you are travelling in a group or as a family. Delivering luxury at every turn, Gondwana’s rooms are all en-suite with private patio’s and balconies. Rooms, all with wireless Internet access, have been decorated stylishly to reflect the natural hues and feeling of the surrounding landscapes. Your every comfort is assured with air conditioning, underfloor heating as well as in-room safes and tea/coffee facilities.

While you relax in the bar or lounge around the fireplace with a drink or a book, your children will be delighted by the playroom with its own TV and selection of books, DVD’s and puzzles. Buy a memento of your trip at the gift boutique and make full use of this luxury lodge’s other facilities such as the swimming pool (with a shallow area for children), the spa and relaxation space including a steam room.

Gondwana Lodge is located along the R62 route which wanders through South Africa’s beautiful Klein Karoo region. It is set on the expansive Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, only three hours drive from Cape Town between the small towns of Montague and Barrydale.
