The Marine Hermanus has a spectacular clifftop setting, on a stretch of coastline which famously offers the best shore-based whale watching in the world. Staying at this luxurious seaside hotel puts you right at the heart of the action, with southern right whales breaching and splashing in the ocean below (July to November).
Arriving at The Marine Hermanus you instantly feel welcome. Staff are professional yet friendly, and there are lovely little touches such as a bottle of wine waiting in your room. The hotel has 40 rooms in total: the luxury rooms and suites all have sea views, while the standard rooms overlook the courtyard and gardens. We’d certainly recommend a sea-facing room, especially during whale season when your whale watching starts before getting out of bed.
Dining at The Marine is a real treat. Choose between the intricate flavours served at The Pavilion, or the more bistro-style SeaFood. Both are excellent! And for a pre-dinner drink The Sun Lounge is a great spot to chat to other guests while the barman mixes his signature cocktails. Other facilities worth mentioning include the saltwater swimming pool in the hotel courtyard, and the Carchele Beauty Spa which has a steam room, DermaLife Capsule and couples massage treatment room.
Directly in front of the hotel lawns is the pretty Cliff Path with a few well-placed benches. Golfers will be happy to hear that staying at The Marine puts them a 15-minute drive from Arabella – which has one of South Africa’s top golf courses. Then there are the wine farms in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley including the Hamilton Russell Vineyards, where you can taste their award-winning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
