Ras Kutani – enchanting, exclusive accommodation in Dar es Salaam
The nine cottages on offer at this luxury destination are all charming; made from local materials that blend with the environment, the décor inside is a unique combination of African chic and European comforts.
All of the cottages have en-suite bathrooms and boast spacious verandas overlooking the Indian Ocean. The beds are massive and also on the veranda you will find Swahili daybeds and hammocks from which to enjoy the views. High on the surrounding hills are four larger suites with their own private plunge pools as well as a family unit which is two adjoining cottages that share a living area.
Dine on fresh lobster, crab and sublimely fresh seafood in the dining room at this luxury lodge. Relax even further by booking a massage or two during your stay.
All you have to do at this luxury destination is indulge and relax. Spend your days walking the beach or bathing in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
You can get out on the water in a variety of ways from sailing, snorkeling, windsurfing or even deep-sea fishing. Hike through the indigenous coastal forest right next to the lodge or head out for the lagoon. The forest is home to more than 130 different species of trees and your chances of spotting the spectacular black-and-white Colobus monkey are high. Guided walks to the local inland villages as well as fishing villages along the coast are also on offer.
Discover the colourful marine life by snorkeling or hiring a kayak; dolphins frequent this part of the coastline as do whales and turtles. It is a great birding destination and other wildlife you may spot include baboons, wild pigs and the elusive civet.
The luxury Ras Kutani is set roughly 35km south of Dar es Salaam on the coastline and flanked by a freshwater lagoon and coastal forest. You can fly-in from Dar es Salaam by charter to a private airstrip (10 minutes) or drive (1.5 hours).
