Sanctuary Saadani River Lodge is a small and welcoming lodge, tucked into the riverine jungle that lines the Wami River. The surroundings are lush and wonderfully relaxing: birds flit through the forest canopy, monkeys leap from tree to tree, and hippo grunt and splash in the river below.
After early morning starts and long, bumpy game drives; this luxurious riverside lodge is the perfect place to simply unwind. You won’t find the huge herds here that you will in the Serengeti, and wildlife is a lot more skittish. But that’s part of the appeal; it’s wild and raw with few other vehicles about.
Go on river cruises past pods of hippo and an incredible array of birds, or set out on a game drive to the coast (Saadani National Park is the only coastal wildlife reserve in Kenya) to have lunch at the lodge’s sister property. The lodge has a lovely swimming pool area, an in-house spa or you can opt for a stroll along the river - your guide pointing out the kingfishers, herons, fish eagles and pelicans.
Sanctuary Saadani River Lodge has 17 incredibly luxurious suites, each set well apart to allow for plenty of privacy. Inside you’ll find a four-poster bed and comfortable couches, while glass sliding doors open onto your own private deck overlooking the river. The bathrooms are fantastic, and have both a deep soaking bathtub (with natural bath products) as well as an outdoor shower.
Service is excellent without being intrusive, and the food is certain to be some of the best you’ll have anywhere on safari. Look forward to sundowner drinks and snacks on the river, three-course lunches out on the deck and candlelit dinners around the pool. And, if you’re travelling as a family or want even more privacy, then consider booking the ‘Wami Suite’: a 2-bedroom villa with its own infinity pool.
