Kafue Flats : Traveller's Overview Category : Safari Destinations

Choose to visit one of the most important and exciting wetlands in the world when choosing the Kafue Flats region of Zambia as your African safari destination. Designated by the WWF as a protected conservation area, the Kafue Flats are found in the central region of Zambia to the north west of the Lower Zambezi National Park and to the west of the Luangwa Valley region. You will be visiting the second largest national park in the world when vacationing at Kafue Flats and one of the least developed.

Home to a varied array of wildlife and the endemic Kafue lechwe (antelope) that is found here in its thousands, the Kafue Flats promises you an exhilarating safari experience while staying in luxury safari lodge accommodation. Spend your days in this virtually unexplored territory amidst herds of elephant, antelope, buffalo, zebra, hartebeest as well as Africa’s mighty predators, including prides of lion, the elusive cheetah and endangered wild dogs.

The unusual sight of the shy sitatungu using its widespread hooves to cross the river on floating reed mats will become an indelible memory as will the sight of the secretive and rare yellow-backed duiker emerging from the bush. The distinctive candelabra tree, the teak forests and the floodplains are home to possibly the greatest variety of animals and birds found anywhere in Africa.

Follow the Kafue River to the south and discover the vast inland sea around the Itezhi Tezhi Dam. The partially submerged trees provide perfect perches for the many waterbirds of the region. Rack up your bird count when spotting any of the close on 500 species found here including the endemic Chaplin’s Barbet or just relax on the banks of the Kafue River fishing for bream, barbell and fresh water pike.

Combine this amazing experience with other Zambian destinations on a tour or contact the Southern Africa Travel team for the best advice on how to get the most out of your Zambian vacation.

The Kafue Flats National Park is best known for:

The Busanga Plains
A vast flat expanse of wetland and flood plains found in the north west of the country, the Busanga Plains is one of the highlight attractions of the Kafue National Park. Sometimes when the floodwaters recede at the beginning of the dry season in May, huge herds of hippos are left stranded in the shallow waters. The plains now covered with lush vegetation attract many herbivores and the predators that stalk them. The lions of the region are known for their tree-climbing abilities and this is one of the best places to spot the speedy cheetah.

Cheetah
The Kafue Flats region of Zambia offers you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see cheetah. The beautiful creatures can often be spotted on the Busanga Plains of Zambia, reaching up to 125km in speed as they take out after their chosen prey.

Red Lechwe
It is an amazing and beautiful sight to see the thousands of red lechwe wandering in vast herds across the golden plains of the Kafue Flats region of Zambia. Nearly extinct fifty years ago their numbers have recovered dramatically and this is one of the best places to view them.
