Glorified by unabashed scenic extravagance, the Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Victoria Falls, epitomises the thrusting elbow of the Zambezi. Playground and frontier for the adventurer, the sportsman and nature’s own admiration societies, Zimbabwe is an experience that can be savoured, remembered and never forgotten.
Zimbabwe offers a wide variety of travel and holiday opportunities. With a climate of short, mild winters and long warm summers, it is favourable for visits all year round. Although Southern Africa Travel have only featured the Victoria Falls as a highlight in Zimbabwe, due to the current low demand for the rest of the country, our expert travel consultants can tailor-make tours and safaris in this region, or a more popular option would be to ‘add-on’ to your itinerary visits to the neighbouring countries.
Lake Kariba, created in the late 1950s by damming the Zambezi River, consists of over 3 200 square kilometres of water. Studded with islands and surrounded by mountains it provides a permanent playground for watersports enthusiasts as well as superb birdwatching, game viewing and fresh water fishing.
Twice as high and one and a half times as wide as Niagra, the Victoria Falls is divided into five separate falls, the Devils Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls and the Eastern Cataract, ranging in height from 60 metres - 110 metres. The peak flow is usually around mid-April when the pray can rise 450 metres into the air, hence the name, ‘the smoke that thunders’.
The Victoria Falls is also a popular destination from the Zambian side.
Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve is a 100,000 acre private reserve in Zimbabwe which boasts Africa’s Big Five (leopard, lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo). Malilangwe, meaning “Call of the Leopard”, is a reserve with diverse ecologies full of animals big and small. It truly is a destination to take your time and enjoy every wildlife encounter
The Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls is also known for the quality of its wildlife viewing as well as the luxury safari accommodation on offer. Look out for white rhino, buffalo, elephant and giraffe in this region as well as the commonly sighted baboons and warthogs.
