Day 1 to 2 | Windhoek to Damaraland
Depart from Windhoek to the Skeleton Coast via Conception Bay. The Kuiseb canyon and adjoining red dunes are a spectacular view from the air. The flight includes an aerial view of the famous Eduard Bohlen shipwreck at Conception Bay. After refuelling at Swakopmund, enjoy a low-level flight north along the Skeleton Coast past the Cape Cross seal colony and a light picnic lunch near the beach. Then fly across the desert to the Ugab formations, a nearly lifeless ‘moon landscape' of numerous black ridges in stark contrast to the white desert floor. Overnight at Kuidas Camp in the Huab River Valley.
-
Day 2 to 3 | Damaraland to Kaokoland
Explore the colourful red lava and yellow sandstone of the Huab River environs and discover the fascinating ecological aspects of this area. A highlight is the Welwitschia Mirabilis. After lunch depart for a scenic flight along the coast to Terrace Bay in the Skeleton Coast Park. The haunting remains of shipwrecks are scattered along this part of the coast. Later explore the dunes and beach by Land Rover; marvel at the profusion of multi-coloured pebbles consisting of agate, lava, granite and quartz and look out for old bleached whale bones. From here you fly north to Purros camp in the Hoarusib Valley where you will overnight.
-
Day 3 to 4 | Kaokoland to Kunene
This morning embark on a scenic drive along the Hoarusib Valley to visit a settlement of the nomadic Himba people. Look out for the desert-dwelling elephants that frequent this valley. Then continue north along the Skeleton Coast by aircraft to the Kunene River acting as a border to Angola. The Kaiu Maru shipwreck and pieces from old sailing vessels lie scattered along this part of the coast. From the airfield take a scenic drive by Land Rover to a special lunch site, after which you will continue through the mountains and dunes of the Hartmann Valley to Kunene River camp where you will overnight.
-
Day 4 | Kunene to Windhoek
Observe the prolific birdlife and possibly some crocodiles on an early morning boat trip on the Kunene River as it flows through scenic desert landscape. Birds vary from aquatic species on the perennial waters, to endemic desert varieties and those that inhabit dense riverine vegetation. After lunch at the camp, you will fly back to Windhoek, arriving as the sun sets.
