This 10-day Tanzania safari and beach holiday combines exceptional big game viewing with an idyllic beach break on the exotic Spice Island, Zanzibar. Your safari starts in the wildlife haven of Ngorongoro Crater, followed by a luxury tented safari on the southern Serengeti plains. From there it’s off to a boutique resort in Zanzibar, for three days in an oceanfront villa overlooking one of the top island beaches in the world!
Your flight lands at Kilimanjaro Airport where, after clearing customs and immigration, you’ll be met and transferred to Arusha Coffee Lodge. Spend your first night in Tanzania in a comfortable chalet tucked away on the extensive grounds of a coffee estate, just outside the town of Arusha.
Depending on the time you arrive you could go on a guided tour of the estate to find out how coffee is grown, harvested and roasted; there’s an outdoor swimming pool for sunny afternoons and a cosy lounge for chilly evenings – settle into one of the leather couches and order a pre-dinner drink next to the crackling log fire.
There’s plenty of private space at your chalet too, which includes a split-level living area and outside deck with its own small fireplace. Lunch is served al fresco in the beautiful tree-filled grounds and dinner in the a la carte restaurant in the original landowner’s home (now the main lodge) which dates back to the early 1900s.
After breakfast out in the gardens, you leave Arusha Coffee Lodge and are driven via Lake Manyara to the Ngorongoro Highlands. For the next two nights you’ll be staying in one of the log cabin-style cottages at Ngorongoro Exploreans Lodge, an easy 20-minute drive from the game-packed crater.
The following day you journey down to the crater floor for a full day of game viewing. Said to have the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa, Ngorongoro Crater offers up thrilling big game sightings: lion, spotted hyena, cheetah and leopard; black rhino are regularly seen and the plains are grazed by large herds of buffalo, zebra, antelope and wildebeest. The day includes a picnic lunch next to the crater lake, the feeding grounds for flocks of pink flamingos.
In the late afternoon you return to Ngorongoro Exploreans Lodge. Each of the two-room cottages has a bedroom and separate living room opening onto a private deck with wonderful forest and valley views. The service is warm and attentive, and the lodge has its own spa – we can’t think of a better way to round off a day out in safari vehicle, than with a spa treatment or relaxing massage.
You’re driven to the Serengeti National Park via Olduvai Gorge, one of the world’s most important archaeological sites, then on to Serengeti Pioneer Camp. Designed in the style of a mobile tented camp, Serengeti Pioneer has 12 comfortable tents set up against a rocky hillside with superb views over the Serengeti plains. You arrive at camp in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive.
For the next two days explore the Serengeti National Park on morning and afternoon drives led by your expert guide. Pioneer Camp lies in a game-rich region of the Serengeti known in particular for its abundance of big cats: lion, leopard and cheetah. Any time of year offers up excellent sightings, and if you travel between November and January or March and June you might also find yourself surrounded by the wildebeest and zebra herds of the Great Migration.
Other highlights of a stay at Serengeti Pioneer Camp include sundowner drinks out on the plains, enjoying the peace and quiet of this secluded camp with its incredible Serengeti views, evening chats around a blazing fire, and lying in bed cocooned under canvas as you listen to the distant roar of a lion or the sound of zebra grazing close to your tent.
After breakfast transfer to Seronera Airstrip for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar via Arusha. You touch down on the exotic Spice Island at about 2pm, and are met at the airport for your transfer to Baraza Resort & Spa on Zanzibar’s East Coast (the drive takes about an hour).
There’s so much to do over the next few days: stroll or cycle along wide, white beaches; kayak out to the reef or go snorkelling in the nearby coral lagoon; try your hand at kitesurfing; learn palm weaving; go scuba diving or simply relax by the pool enjoying a freshly squeezed juice and grilled seafood platter. And do set aside time for Baraza’s world-class spa, their Sultan’s Bath treatment for two comes highly recommended!
Staying at Baraza feels like a sojourn in a sultan’s palace with its arched doorways, beautiful antiques, pillow-filled nooks and intricate brass lanterns. Choose between spacious one-bedroom and two-bedroom villas each with their own private plunge pool, while butler service and fine cuisine add the final touches to this idyllic island break.
