Enjoy an authentic under canvas safari experience with phenomenal big game viewing in Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve. Your safari begins at Ilkeliani Camp with its spacious tents set on the bank of the Talek River. From there you journey deeper into the Mara to Entim Camp, which has a fantastic location overlooking the Mara River close to several crossing points for the Great Migration.
Arriving at Jomo Kenyatta Airport, you’ll be met by our representative and shown to your awaiting safari vehicle. It’s around a 4.5-hour drive from Nairobi, down the Eastern Escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, to the Masai Mara Game Reserve and your camp for the night. If you’d prefer to skip the long transfer you can fly to Ol Kiombo airstrip, just 25 minutes from Ilkeliani.
Ilkeliani is a simple eco-friendly tented camp overlooking the Talek River. Your days here begin with an early morning wakeup call and steaming cup of coffee, then it’s off on a dawn game drive led by your experience Maasai guide. Return to camp for a hearty breakfast or, if you’d prefer, ask for a packed picnic and stay out to explore more of this incredible reserve.
This region of the Mara delivers excellent year-round game viewing: elephant gather at the Talek River; there are regular sightings of lion, cheetah and hyena; leopard patrol the dense forest fringing the river, and crocodiles bask on the riverbanks. After a day filled with thrilling sightings, join the other guests to swap safari stories around the campfire before sitting down together to a candlelit dinner.
After breakfast, set off on a morning game drive en route to Entim Camp, arriving in time for lunch. This small and exclusive tented camp has a phenomenal location at the heart of the Masai Mara Reserve, close to the Mara River. Staying here your game viewing starts from the moment you set off on your drive, those early morning and evening sightings in the magical golden light making Entim a popular camp with top wildlife photographers.
Visit Entim Camp at any time of the year and you’re guaranteed excellent game viewing but it’s during the migration months (July to October) that you have the chance of witnessing something truly special with key Mara River crossing points virtually on your doorstep! Seeing wildebeest herds in their thousands chancing death as they forge their way across this river is without doubt one of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacles.
Between game drives settle into one of the hammocks and enjoy leisurely game viewing watching zebra graze the plains and listening to hippo grunt and splash in the nearby Mara River. In the evening dinner is served in the open dining tent or if you wish you can dine privately on your own tent verandah.
