If you’re planning that perfect honeymoon or simply looking to rekindle the romance we highly recommend this six-night journey to the Quirimbas Archipelago in northern Mozambique. We’ve combined the island resorts of Matemo and Medjumbe for the ultimate in barefoot luxury: soft sand, warm sea, ocean-edge dining and cosy bungalows right on the beach.
The larger of the two Mozambique islands, Matemo has 24 thatched chalets overlooking the dazzling Indian Ocean. It's magical to walk straight out your chalet and onto the wide stretch of beach or spend lazy afternoons watching passing dhows from the comfort of your gently swaying hammock.
When the mood takes you there are plenty of activities to choose from: snorkel or kayak straight off the beach, dive the vibrant coral reefs - the water is warm and the visibility excellent - or take a boat out to the deeper channels and drop offs to fish for kingfish, sailfish and yellow-fin tuna.
Matemo has a slightly more social atmosphere than honeymoon-perfect Medjumbe, and evenings here are often spent chatting to other guests over cocktails at the poolside bar. Dinner is served either alongside the pool, in the restaurant or down on the beach - a real highlight as you dine with your toes in the sand, beneath a canopy of stars.
Flying over the Quirimbas Archipelago, Medjumbe Private Island appears as a green and white speck in an expanse of sparkling blue. As you descend towards a runway that spans the length of the entire island, you can’t help but be amazed by the utter remoteness and exclusivity of this romantic island resort.
You’ll quickly find yourself settling back into the leisurely pace of island life: spectacular wall dives and snorkelling sites await; go water skiing, wind surfing, SUPing or you can even learn to kiteboard. The tides are quite extreme but this makes for great for shell collecting or walking out at low tide to snorkelling spots as good as any dive site.
As for the accommodation, Medjumbe has 13 air-conditioned beach chalets each with a comfortable four-poster bed made up with Egyptian cotton sheets, satellite TV (not that you’re likely to need it), both an indoor and outdoor shower, shaded hammock and Jacuzzi with wonderful sea views. The chalets face west over the ocean so look forward to dazzling sunsets.
Also worth mentioning is spa, where you can get an excellent massage; the five-star meals which include a good choice of seafood - freshly-caught line fish, succulent prawns, grilled crayfish ... – and the friendly and attentive staff. All in all the perfect choice for an idyllic island getaway or romantic retreat.
